Football fans celebrated on the streets of Tehran on Friday, after the national team beat Wales 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Footage showed motorcades and crowds cheering on Valiasr Square, with some waving Iran’s flag.
Speaking during an interview, Tehran resident Mohsen Mirtalebi stated “It couldn’t get better than this. The joy the guys, Iran National Football team players, have given us is incredible. I am speechless.”
Another fan added “Don’t worry. We will beat the US too. We will qualify for the next [knockout stage] round too.”
Both goals were scored after Wales’ goalkeeper had received a red card, the first in the tournament. Rouzbeh Cheshmi scored from a distance in the 98th minute, followed by Ramin Rezaeian’s goal in the 101st minute.
The Iranian team sang the national anthem in the second match after staying silent during the opener, which was widely interpreted as a sign of solidarity with protesters at home.
In their next match, Iran is set to face the national team of the USA.
