Tokyo’s new theme park, inspired by the popular Studio Ghibli animation films, opened its doors to the first visitors in Aichi prefecture on Tuesday.

Despite the rainy weather, hundreds of Ghibli fans visited the facility after the inauguration. Many visitors were seen dressed in anime themed costumes, with one person even cosplaying studio creator Hayao Miyazaki. “There are a lot of forests, so even this kind of weather is fun”, said Mr Hirasawa, who came to the park with his wife.

Tickets for Ghibli Park are sold out for the rest of the year, and 5,000 people are expected to visit the installations every day. Miki, another visitor, said he got his tickets a month ago. “We applied for tickets to Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse for the first slot on the first day and we got it”, he said.

The park is divided into five areas inspired by the animated films of the studio, including the recreation of the scenarios of the popular productions ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ or ‘Spirited Away’.
