The underground Nativity scene at Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira was lit up in with one million LED lights, as seen in footage on Thursday.
Coloured lighting shone on the Roman Catholic church’s large crucifix, as well as on the stone sculptures depicting the traditional display of Jesus in the manger, alongside stable animals and worshippers.
A tunnel of LEDs and a Christmas tree were also illuminated, while outside musicians and choirs entertained the crowds. A huge orb of LED lights, resembling a giant Christmas bauble, was also seen in the centre of the celebrations.
The Salt Cathedral is built in the tunnels of an old salt mine, stretching around 180 metres below the surface. It is a year-round tourist destination and pilgrimage site.
