The world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, was seen erupting in Hawaii island on Tuesday, for the first time in almost 40 years.
Until now the lava flow has not threatened inhabited areas and no evacuation orders have been given, however, nearby residents were warned about the risk of falling ash.
According to the US Geological Service (USGS), the volcano’s alert level has been changed to “warning” – the highest classification.
Mauna Loa rises 4,169m above sea level and spans an area of more than 5,179 sq km.
