Thousands of jubilant Morocco fans celebrated their national team’s sensational 2-0 victory over Belgium outside the Al-Thumama Stadium in Doha on Sunday.
Fans were seen singing and dancing outside the stadium as Morocco won its first World Cup game since 1998.
“We are very happy because it was a bit hard, as Belgium is a great country. They worked a lot and played well, so it was very hard, very tough, but our boys did well and we are very happy and proud of our country,” said one Morocco fan.
“This victory proves our team is in the good shape. Nevertheless, we will do match after match and we hope we can go far in the tournament if God wills,” added a second.
A few Belgium fans were also seen outside the Al-Thumama Stadium on Sunday.
“I’m really disappointed with the team. We played better than Canada, but still. I don’t know what is missing but we are not playing well and I think Morocco was a better team today. There is nothing else to say,” explained a disillusioned fan.
Morocco is now top of Group F, having previously secured a goalless draw against Croatia. They will play Canada in their next World Cup outing on Thursday.
