Hundreds of Saudi Arabia supporters gathered at the Expo City World Cup fan zone in Dubai on Saturday to watch their team’s group-stage match against Poland.
The fans were feeling cautiously optimistic, hoping for another sensational victory after Saudi Arabia’s shock win against Lionel Messi’s Argentina squad on Tuesday.
“We came to watch the Saudi team game and, of course, to cheer for them. Hopefully, the Saudi team will play in this match with the same performance as in their match against Argentina. I hope they sustain the same high performance to qualify for the next games,” said one excited fan.
Sadly, it wasn’t to be for Saudi Arabia with Poland’s Robert Lewandowski scoring his first World Cup goal, leading his side to a decisive 2-0 victory.
“The game was good, especially after the remarkable performance of the Saudi squad. Unfortunately, the performance of the Saudi team grew weaker after the penalty kick, and also the changes of the Saudi team’s coach were delayed. I hope they will win over the Mexican team in the next game,” said one disappointed Saudi fan.
Saudi Arabia faces Mexico in their next outing on Wednesday. A win will be imperative to keep their World Cup dream alive beyond the group stage.
