At least one person died and up to 12 others were missing after torrential rain caused a landslide on the island of Ischia on Saturday.
Footage filmed in Casamicciola Terme showed destruction across the port city, including flooded streets and damaged vehicles and roads, while search and rescue operations were underway.
Speaking during an interview, Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said “there are difficulties in rescue operations because the weather conditions are very challenging, but we are sending rescue vehicles both by sea and by air, and we hope to keep the situation updated by the end of the day.” Although the minister stated that no casualties were confirmed, Naples prefect Claudio Palomba confirmed the death of a woman at a press conference later on Saturday.
Eight people have been rescued according to local authorities with rescuers expected to continue working throughout the night.
