Germany: World-famous Christmas market Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg opens its doors

The world-famous Christkindlesmarkt Christmas market opened in Nuremberg on Friday after a two-year hiatus caused by the coronavirus.

Thousands of visitors came to the opening ceremony to hear Nuremberg Christkind Teresa Windschall deliver the traditional Christmas speech dressed as an angel with golden wings.

“It is really great; we are enjoying it. It is just wonderful. Germany knows how to celebrate Christmas, absolutely,” said David and Sandy Bernhard from the United States.

Another tourist from the US, Mr Sanchez, commented that “It is beautiful, it is raining a little bit so it is less beautiful than it could be, but it’s a beautiful evening, the lights are wonderful and the shops are wonderful”.

Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets. In pre-pandemic 2019, it attracted around two million visitors from all over the world.
