Cuba: Act of remembrance on 6th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s death takes place in Havana

An act of remembrance for Fidel Castro took place at the University of Havana on Friday, the sixth anniversary of his death. The event was attended by officials, hundreds of young students and workers from all over the country, and international guests.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who is on an international tour, could not attend. The event was organised by youth and student organisations led by the Union of Young Communists (UYC) and the Federation of University Students (FSU).

More than a thousand people gathered on the steps, surrounded by huge canvases with figures of Che Guevara, Fidel and Raul Castro, Jose Marti and Julio Antonio Mella. Attendees shouted, ‘Long live, Fidel!’ and ‘Homeland or death!’

Castro, born in 1926 in Biran, eastern Cuba, died on 25 November 2016 at 90.
