State of Palestine: Ramallah cartoon exhibition honours slain journalist Shireen Abu Akleh

The Palestinian Journalists Association opened an international cartoon exhibition in Ramallah on Wednesday focusing on press freedom in Palestine in memory of murdered journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

President of the Journalists’ Syndicate, Nasser Abu Bakr addressed the opening ceremony of the exhibition where “more than one hundred paintings by seventy-three painters from fifty-four countries” were put on display at Mahmoud Darwish Museum.

Abu Akleh was fatally shot while covering a raid in the West Bank city of Jenin on May 11 of this year. The IDF denied responsibility for the killing of the 51-year-old US citizen, but later admitted it was likely that one of their soldiers was accountable.

Earlier in November United States informed Israeli authorities that it would open its own investigation into the death of Palestinian-American journalist. In response, Israel’s Prime Minister Yair Lapid said that no Israeli Defence Force (IDF) soldiers would be investigated by the FBI or any other foreign entities.
