Turkey: Duzce residents flee homes for night on streets after 5.9 magnitude quake

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern Duzce province early Wednesday, with tremors felt in Istanbul, the capital Ankara and other regions, injuring at least 80 people during the panic.

Footage filmed in Duzce shows people waiting in front of Duzce Municipality after the earthquake, the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) distributing blankets and soup to residents who spent the night outside, and the damaged courthouse in the city.

The earthquake woke people from their sleep in Duzce and many rushed out of their houses. More than 130 aftershocks were reported in the region. Turkish Red Crescent and the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) dispatched their teams to help locals.

AFAD stated on its website that the earthquake’s epicentre was located in Duzce’s Golyaka district and struck at 4:08 AM (7:08 GMT) at a depth of 6.81 kilometres.
