Italy: Venice keeps dry as protective floodgates ward off high tides amid heavy rain

Mose, Venice’s system of floodgates, was able to shield the Italian historical St. Mark’s Square from exceptionally high tides on Tuesday as heavy rains swept across Italy.

Floods however swept the popular beaches of Chioggia and Sotomarina, flooding streets, buildings and entire stretches of sandy shores.

This marks the third time in the past 100 years, tide levels had reached a record level in the Italian city with weather bulletins forecasting a tide of 170 cm (5.58 feet).
