Locals and tourists were out in force, enjoying the delights of the famous ‘Berliner Weihnachtszeit’ Christmas market, on opening night in AlexanderPlatz on Monday.
Footage shows revellers visiting the hundreds of stalls, doing some early Christmas shopping, eating crepes and waffles, and drinking traditional gluhwein.
“Right now it’s like it’s the end of November, and already feel like I’m in Christmas and it’s just the whole atmosphere,” said one visitor, Samuel. “Everybody’s charming, happy, and the company is also great and then the gluhwein, you know.”
An ice rink, ferris wheel, carousel and other fairground attractions added to the fun, while even Santa Claus himself put in an appearance on a huge flying sleigh (safely attached to a zipwire!).
“I guess it’s my fourth Christmas market, and the last two times it was good,” said local, Priya. “We were expecting it for more days, and sometimes, like, it will be cancelled or not because of covid … because of all the electricity and energy crisis, but this brings so much happiness.”
The market continues until December 30.
