Spain: Police detain Femen activists attempting to interrupt pro-Franco rally in Madrid

Three Femen activists were detained and held for two hours after they attempted to interrupt a rally in central Madrid on Sunday to mark the death of dictator Francisco Franco and also the leader of the Falanga, Primo de Rivera.

Rally participants made Fascist salute and sang Cara al Sol, the famous Franco anthem. Participants also reportedly spoke out against the Law of Remembrance recently approved by the government.

The Remembrance Law stipulates that the remains of the ‘leaders’ of the 1936 military coup cannot remain buried in a public place, contributing to public acts of glorification and perpetuation of human rights violations committed during the war or dictatorship.
