Iraq: Thousands attend public funeral in Sulaymaniyah for gas tank explosion victims

Bodies of victims of an explosion of a gas tank were buried during a ceremony in Sulaymaniyah on Saturday.

“We shared our sorrows with all the people of Iraq and the neighboring regions and all the provinces of Kurdistan,” said Imam Sheikh Mohsen Mufti Naqshbandi.

Thousands of mourners gathered around coffins, of which some were wrapped in Kurdish flags, to bid a final farewel to the victims. Officials and members of the military, as well as journalists, were seen among the mourners.

“We thank God, and we thank all the people in Sulaymaniyah and everyone who stood by us in this disaster that afflicted our family,” said a victim’s relative.

According to local media, fifteen people lost their lives and another twelve were injured when a three-storey house collapsed due to an explosion caused by a gas leak in a heating system in Kazioh district of Sulaymaniyah governorate on Thursday night.

Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the semi-autonomous Kurdish-controlled region in northern Iraq, ordered an investigation of the incident.
