Cortina prepares for 2026 Olympics amid climate and sustainability concerns – Market Subset News

Environmental activists and residents of Cortina commented on the upcoming 2026 Olympics and the planned construction of a new bobsleigh track for the games.

Footage shows an abandoned bobsled slide, once built to high standards, covered with grass and other vegetation.

“The issue is that we need to spend 85 million (Euros) though we know full well we will go over that cap because of the increase in raw material prices and hundreds of millions of public funds to build something that will ultimately be abandoned some years later like before for the Turin Olympics. We will see the same thing happen in Cortina,” said Marina Menardi, ,member of Comitato Civico Cortina.

At the foot of the sports complex, in the town of Cortina, mayor Gianluca Lorenzi commented on the sustainability issue for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, for which Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo had previously been chosen.

“When it comes to sustainability, of course it is a problem which affects us as administrators because up to now it was 400,000 Euros and today with the energy prices these costs have gone through the roof.” he said.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are said to take place from February 6 to February 22.
