Rio locals say ‘God is in control’ as Lula declared winner in presidential elections – Market Subset News

Despite differing opinions on Lula’s win, Rio de Janeiro locals accepted the former left-wing president’s win in the second round of the presidential election calling the majority vote ‘the voice of God’.

“(There) is someone in charge (points to the sky), allowing things to flow, but at the right time he will show and put the thing in place which will not necessarily be my opinion,” said a Rio local Josmar on Monday one day after Luis Ignacio ‘Lula’ da Silva emerged victorious having secured 50.9 percent of the vote, against 49.1 percent of the vote for the right-wing incumbent Jair Bolsonaro.

The results of both round one and the run-off were much closer than the final opinion polls predicted, with Lula expected to beat Bolsonaro 52:48 on Sunday.

Lula previously served as the 35th president between 2003 and 2010. He was jailed for corruption in 2018 but had his conviction annulled last year, allowing him to run again.
