German federal government is ‘monitoring the situation in Iran with great concern’ said a government spokesperson in on Monday, adding Berlin was ready to explore ‘further measures’ to address escalting violence amid growing protests.

“We welcome the fact that the EU has issued further sanctions against Iran,” said German Government Spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit one day after Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Germany and the EU were examining whether to classify Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation.

The federal press breifing also underlined interal disagreements within the traffic light coaliation after Finance Minister and FDP leader Christian Lindner urged Berlin to consider fracking to access natural gas resources amid Germany’s worsening energy crisis.

“Federal Chancellor was asked about this question in an interview last week and he replied that the previous Federal Government had already raised these issues and that there were very clear protests on the part of the citizens of the areas in question. For this reason, the subject of fracking was not followed up any further,” stressed Hebestreit.
