NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg commented on a potential use of nuclear weapons by Russia against Ukraine, in a speech at a meeting of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, in the European Parliament, in Brussels on Tuesday.
“Our message is that any use of nuclear weapons is absolutely unacceptable, it will totally change the nature of the conflict and Russia must know that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” said Stoltenberg.
NATO Secretary General also stated that a “hot winter” is coming, in which, continuous support for Ukraine mut be provided.
“We need to be prepared for a hot winter, be prepared to continue to provide support because the alternative to not provide support to Ukraine, then we risk to pay a much higher price, then we really risk a dangerous situation in Europe that it will also makes us even more vulnerable,” he said.
Furthermore, Stoltenberg said that that European states must increase defense production, to ensure their own deterrence as well as support to Ukraine.
“Therefore we need also to ramp up production, I met with NATO arm directors this morning and we are now discussing how we also in cooperation with the European Union can ensure that we produce more so we can deliver more, both ensure our own deterence on defense but also to provide support to Ukraine,” said Stoltenberg.
