The Iraqi parliament voted to renew confidence in its speaker, Muhammad al-Halbousi in Baghdad on Wednesday with 222 out of 235 deputies rejecting the resignation.
“Today’s session is historic and crucial in the history of the Iraqi Parliament. It’s the first time in the history of parliamentary sessions that we vote to renew confidence in the Speaker of the Parliament after the latter had announced his resignation for unknown reasons. Today, the Parliament has renewed confidence in Mr. Al-Halbousi,” said MP for Sovereignty Alliance Adnan Al-Jehishi.
Al-Halbousi had submitted his resignation earlier this week in light of the continuing political crisis which has crippled Iraq since the 2021 October elections.
