Francesco Lollobrigida, leader of the Chamber of Deputies of Fratelli d Italia (Brothers of Italy) held a press conference for an analysis of the election result in Rome on Monday after his party claimed victory with 26 per cent of the vote.
“It has been an electoral campaign full of insults (against us) and with a lack of a real alternative for Italians (from them)”, Lollobrigida said. “In these ten years, Italy had a somewhat strange democracy, a bit frozen. The first time in a long time that there could be a government that is an expression of the popular will,” he added.
The party’s leader, Giorgia Meloni is set to become Italy’s first female Prime Minister. Meloni has been described by some as ‘far-right’, leading to concerns from other member states of the European Union (EU).
Lollobrigida responded to the words of the French Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, who said earlier on Monday that France will be monitoring civil rights in Italy.
“(I don’t remember) any Italian government that has used words like ‘we will watch over’ what happens in France or in Germany. I believe that the decisions of the people should be respected. For the Brothers of Italy, it is natural to respect governments. Anyway, there is no risk. We can relax,” he said.
Meloni is set t form a right-wing alliance which will include League for Salvini Premier, the party of former Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.
The alliance will take control of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
